Japan's SGC Corporation, engaged in producing and selling gold products, revealed it will host a "Great Gold Exhibition" themed around gold items for six days from the 14th to the 19th of this month at Takashimaya in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The highlight of this exhibition is life-sized golden statues of Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani in both his pitcher and batter stances, with the two statues together priced at 100 million yen (approximately 4.5 million RMB).
The two statues, named "Golden Batter Shohei Ohtani" and "Golden Pitcher Shohei Ohtani," took about two years to complete. The batter statue is covered with 1,550 gold leaf sheets, while the pitcher statue has 1,450 sheets, totaling 3,000 gold leaf sheets used. The batter statue stands about the same height as Ohtani, roughly 1.9 meters (about 2.4 meters including the bat's tip), and the pitcher statue is about 1.7 meters tall.
The pricing is inspired by Ohtani’s unprecedented "50 home runs and 50 stolen bases" record achieved in the 2024 season, setting each statue’s price at 50 million yen (approximately 2.25 million RMB).
The exhibition will also launch the "Shohei Ohtani Pure Gold Collection 2025" series, which includes pure gold commemorative medals about 5.4 cm in diameter and weighing around 100 grams, available in pitcher and batter designs, priced at 6.985 million yen (tax included).
Additionally, the official collection features pure gold statues at 1/10 and 1/20 scale, available in pitcher, batter, and "two-way" styles; the 1/10 scale is priced at 18.26 million yen, and the 1/20 scale at 5.61 million yen.
