Matt Quatraro secures a three-year contract extension with the Kansas City Royals after leading the team to winning records for two consecutive seasons.

After assuming the managerial role with the Royals following the 2022 season and guiding the team to winning records in both 2024 and 2025, including a postseason berth, Matt Quatraro received a three-year contract extension today (the 5th).

At 52, Quatraro’s professional playing career was confined to the minor leagues from 1996 through 2003, without ever making it to the majors. However, upon retiring after the 2003 season, he immediately transitioned into coaching, serving both as a coach and manager within the Tampa Bay Rays’ minor league system, as well as an assistant coach at the collegiate level from 2004 to 2009.

After departing the Rays following the 2013 season, Quatraro joined the Cleveland Guardians as a major league assistant hitting coach, later returning to the Rays as third base coach and bench coach. Although he was unsuccessful in securing the Oakland Athletics and New York Mets managerial positions in the 2021 postseason, he was officially hired as the Royals’ major league manager after the 2022 season.

The Royals finished 56-106 in 2023, but rebounded strongly in 2024 with an 86-76 record, reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2015. Statistics show Quatraro became the third manager in major league history to improve his team by at least 30 wins following a 100-loss season, earning him the second-highest votes for the American League Manager of the Year award that year.

In 2025, the Royals maintained roughly a .500 winning percentage for most of the season and finished with an 82-80 record after winning six of their last nine games, marking two consecutive seasons above .500. Data indicates the Royals are the eighth team since the wild card system was introduced in 1995 to achieve back-to-back winning seasons after a 100-loss campaign.

The initial contract included a team option for 2026, which the Royals exercised before the start of the 2025 season. The newly signed second contract spans three years and also contains a team option for a fourth year (2030).

Besides Quatraro, Royals president John Sherman has publicly expressed strong confidence in general manager J.J. Picollo, signing him to a six-year extension through 2030, with a team option for 2031, in February 2025. This ensures close collaboration between Picollo and Quatraro for the coming years.
