The San Francisco Giants have signed former Rangers starting right-hander Tyler Mahle to a one-year contract.

MLB.com reporter Mark Feinsand reported today that the San Francisco Giants have agreed to a one-year contract with right-hander Tyler Mahle, enhancing their starting rotation depth. The team has not formally announced the agreement yet.

The 2025 season extended Mahle’s ongoing struggles with injuries over the past few years. In the last three seasons, he started only 24 games, spending most of the time recovering from Tommy John surgery. In 2025, his injury stemmed from right shoulder fatigue, which kept him on the injured list for over three months.

Despite this, the 31-year-old pitcher remained effective before and after injury breaks, even though his strikeout rate (19.1%) was lower than pre-surgery levels (24.9%). Mahle pitched a total of 86.2 innings for the Rangers with an ERA of just 2.18, ranking fourth among all pitchers with at least 15 starts, behind Nathan Eovaldi, Trevor Rogers, and Paul Skenes.

After last season, Mahle did not receive a qualifying offer from the Rangers, so signing him does not involve draft pick compensation or penalties.

Overall, when healthy, Mahle has consistently been an above-average starting pitcher. Since early 2020, over 473.1 innings pitched, he has posted a 3.61 ERA (ERA+ of 121) and a Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) of 3.77.

The California-born pitcher had his best full season in 2021 with the Cincinnati Reds, setting career highs in innings pitched (180) and strikeouts (210), while posting a 3.75 ERA (ERA+ of 125). That was also his last season without time on the injured list.

Cincinnati traded him to the Minnesota Twins before the 2022 trade deadline, but injuries limited him to just 9 starts for the Twins, and he became a free agent for the first time after the 2023 season.

While recovering from Tommy John surgery, Mahle signed a two-year, $22 million deal with the Rangers in December 2023. He returned to the major leagues later in 2024 and began the 2025 season as part of the Rangers’ starting rotation.

Mahle is the Giants’ second starting pitcher signed from the free agent market this offseason. Earlier, on December 19, they agreed to a two-year, $22 million contract with another right-hander, Adrian Houser. Houser and Mahle are expected to join Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, and Landen Roupp in the Giants’ starting rotation for 2026.

The Giants also have several young starting pitchers providing additional depth, including Hayden Birdsong, Carson Whisenhunt, Trevor McDonald, and Blade Tidwell.
