The Baltimore Orioles will re-sign right-hander Zach Eflin. As reported by MLB.com’s Jake Rill, the agreement is for one year at $10 million, with mutual options for 2027, but the team has not formally announced the contract.
After completing a three-year, $40 million deal with the Tampa Bay Rays following the 2022 season, 31-year-old Eflin became a free agent again. He was traded to the Orioles during the second year of that contract and struggled with injuries throughout the 2025 season, starting only 14 games with Baltimore and posting a high ERA of 5.93.
Approaching his age-32 season, Eflin aims to regain the form he showed during the 2023-2024 seasons, when he started 59 games with an ERA of 3.54.
Since Eflin did not receive a qualifying offer from the Orioles after last season, signing him will neither include draft pick compensation nor impose draft penalties on the signing club.
Eflin is a pitcher known for excellent control, averaging just 1.9 walks per nine innings over his career. His peak came in 2023 when he ranked sixth in the American League Cy Young voting, pitching a career-high 177.2 innings with a 3.50 ERA and an impressive 7.75 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He maintained solid performance in 2024 with a 3.59 ERA over 165.1 innings, including a remarkable 2.60 ERA in nine starts after joining the Orioles.
Eflin started the 2025 season strong with three consecutive quality starts, including a six-inning, two-run outing in the opener against the Toronto Blue Jays that helped secure a win. However, after suffering a right latissimus dorsi strain in April, his season quickly declined. Though he returned in May, he never regained form, and recurring back issues ultimately required season-ending surgery.
Injuries have been a persistent issue for Eflin since his time with the Philadelphia Phillies. Over his ten-year career and 1073.2 innings pitched, he has a 4.28 ERA but has only surpassed 18 starts in a season four times.
