The New York Yankees reportedly strengthen their roster again: Mexican League MVP Torres returns to the MLB system after seven years.

The Mexican League club Laguna Unified Cotton Growers revealed today on social media that Nick Torres, the league’s MVP this season, is set to join the New York Yankees, while thanking him for his five years of service to the team.

Torres, 32, born in California, USA, was selected by the San Diego Padres in the fourth round of the 2014 draft and reached Triple-A by 2016. However, his offensive production was limited, with an OPS of 0.724 over 863 plate appearances in Double-A and 0.657 over 263 plate appearances in Triple-A, never earning a call-up to the major leagues.

In 2019, Torres moved to the Mexican League and has played for Laguna Unified Cotton Growers since 2021, consistently posting an OPS above 0.950 each year. This season, in 86 games and 372 plate appearances, he hit a career-high 27 home runs at any level, ranking third in the entire Mexican League, and earned an OPS of 1.146 (second in the league), which led to his selection as this season’s Mexican League MVP.

Currently, Torres’s home team has announced his move to the Yankees, but the Yankees have yet to confirm the signing, and no American reporters have disclosed the contract details.

The Yankees, who have seen players like Cody Bellinger, Paul Goldschmidt, and Devin Williams enter free agency, have made no major acquisitions during this offseason so far, only re-signing last season’s roster members Trent Grisham, Amed Rosario, Paul Blackburn, and Ryan Yarbrough.

Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner previously denied imposing a strict salary cap on the team but acknowledged that profits cannot be guaranteed. Meanwhile, General Manager Brian Cashman noted during the winter meetings that there are few appealing options available on the market, making it difficult to reach agreements.
