Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reported today that the Chicago Cubs have agreed to terms with right-handed reliever Hunter Harvey, pending a medical evaluation, with no official announcement made by the team yet.
The 31-year-old Harvey missed most of the 2025 season due to injuries, continuing the trend of health issues that also plagued him in 2024. Last year, he appeared in only 12 games for the Kansas City Royals due to a right teres major strain in April and a right groin strain in August. Despite limited appearances, he excelled with a 0.00 ERA over 10.2 innings, allowing just 6 hits and striking out 11 batters.
Harvey features a four-pitch mix, including a four-seam fastball averaging around 96 mph, which served as his primary strikeout pitch last season. His repertoire also includes a sinker, curveball, and slider.
With seven years of major league experience, Harvey has pitched for the Baltimore Orioles, Washington Nationals, and Royals, compiling a 10-11 record with a 3.11 ERA and 201 strikeouts over 185 innings.
Signing Harvey represents the Cubs’ latest move to address uncertainties following the departure of key bullpen players. The team previously signed right-hander Phil Maton to a two-year deal with a club option for a third year in November and recently re-signed lefty Caleb Thielbar for one more season.
Last season’s important bullpen contributors Brad Keller, Drew Pomeranz, and Andrew Kittredge, who helped the Cubs achieve 92 wins, have all left the team. Kittredge was traded to the Orioles earlier this offseason, Keller signed with the Philadelphia Phillies, and Pomeranz has reached an agreement with the Los Angeles Angels.
