Vietnam’s most promising young badminton talent is demonstrating remarkable performance at the close of the year.
One of the brightest rising stars in Vietnamese badminton right now – Nguyễn Thị Thu Huyền continues to delight fans with an outstanding performance at the 2025 Bangladesh International Series held in Dhaka, Bangladesh from December 22 to 26.
On the afternoon of December 24, Thu Huyền played in the round of 16 against the 7th seed from Singapore, Sng Ying Shuen (ranked 245th in the world). Although it seemed unlikely for Huyền to cause an upset against such a strong opponent, the young player from Bình Giang, Hải Dương (former) delivered an excellent match.
It only took 35 minutes (according to the BWF official website) for Thu Huyền to defeat an opponent ranked over 100 places above her in the world badminton rankings. The final score was 21-18, 21-14, with the Vietnamese representative securing a spot in the quarterfinals.
Her next opponent, representing Đồng Nai and teammates with Nguyễn Thùy Linh, Trần Lê Mạnh An, etc., is Lim Zhi Sin, the 2nd seed from Malaysia currently ranked 150th.
Nguyễn Thị Thu Huyền has made significant progress in the last two tournaments of 2025, both held in Bangladesh. In last week’s Challenge-level event, the young talent born in 2011, despite starting from the qualifiers, proved her ability by overcoming many strong seeds to reach the semifinals and win the bronze medal.
This extremely impressive achievement in Dhaka last week helped Thu Huyền make a leap of 650 places in the BWF rankingsand debut within the world’s top 400.
Thu Huyền had to compete in the qualifiers again at this week’s Series event, and it seems the 14-year-old rising star is maintaining good physical condition.
Besides Thu Huyền, another Vietnamese badminton representative who won today at the Bangladesh International Series is the men’s doubles pair Bùi Thành Đạt/Nguyễn Đức Hồng Phúc. Meanwhile, the legend Nguyễn Tiến Minh had to exit in the round of 32 after losing to Tan Zhi Shen (Malaysia).
